“Rowing and reading go well together,” declared George Hext, a Corpus Christi College Boat Club member in the 1800s. His words echo the spirit of Corpus Christi, Girton, Sidney Sussex, and Wolfson College Boat Clubs. These Cambridge institutions, each with a unique history, share a common home on the River Cam. The boathouse itself is a testament to their intertwined stories. Designed by David Roberts and opened in 1958, it was the first combined boathouse in Oxbridge. Corpus Christi College Boat Club, founded in 1828, is one of Cambridge’s oldest and largest college sports clubs. Its history is marked by triumphs, like the Varsity Challenge Cup win in 1868 and numerous Head of the River titles. Sidney Sussex Boat Club, established in 1837, emphasizes accessibility. They boast representation in the Cambridge University Boat Club, Women’s Boat Club, and Lightweight Rowing Club. Wolfson College Boat Club, originally University College Boat Club, was founded in 1968. They made history with the first mixed eight and female coxswain on the Cam. In 2018, Wolfson achieved an unprecedented feat. They won both the Pegasus and Michell Cups. Girton College Boat Club also shares this boathouse. This shared space has fostered a sense of community among the rowers from these different colleges. While they compete against each other on the water, the boathouse serves as a reminder of their shared passion for rowing. It is a place where rivalries are set aside. They share training facilities. Corpus Christi, Girton, Sidney Sussex and Wolfson College Boat Clubs are more than just places to row. They are vibrant communities, steeped in tradition and driven by a passion for the sport.
