Tucked away in the Nord department of northern France lies Ennetiéres-en-Weppes. A charming village it boasts a rich history. Its name has evolved over centuries from Anetiéres in 1066 to its current form. The village sits at an elevation of 41 meters. Its 1044 hectares include extensive farmland.

Ennetiéres-en-Weppes is more than just picturesque scenery. It’s a place where history whispers from the stones. Imagine the lives lived in the Hancardrie hamlet. A casemate stands as a silent testament to the First World War. This once-important seigneurie held sway before the French Revolution.

The story of Ennetiéres-en-Weppes is interwoven with the lives of significant figures. Louis-Joseph de Fourmestraux a chevalier was seigneur of Hancardrie and Oosthove. He served as Treasurer of France in Lille. He held the prestigious position of Keeper of the Seals. His life is a glimpse into the intricate social structures of the past.

Another seigneurie La Quennesennerie adds another layer to the village’s narrative. Pierre-André-François de Fourmestraux held this title. He purchased the office of receiver for abandoned children in Lille. His life too reflects the societal roles and responsibilities of his time.

From 1111 the church and seigneury belonged to the Saint-Pierre Abbey in Ghent. The abbot of St-Pierre later ceded the seigneurial title to the Count of Isenghien in 1582. King Philip II of Spain granted Ennetiéres its distinctive communal rights and privileges. This underscores its significant historical standing within a larger political framework.

The 17th century saw Jacques II Bridoul become seigneur of Ennetiéres. A distinguished figure he served as a counselor and assessor in Lille’s governance. He represented Lille before King Louis XIV. His service earned him letters of ennoblement in 1676. His role provides insight into the dynamics of power and local governance.

The name Ennetiéres itself features in historical records. Notable figures bearing the name achieved distinction. Though their connection to the village remains unclear. Their lineage traces back to Tournai. Their nobility dates back to 1362.

The First World War profoundly impacted Ennetiéres-en-Weppes. Many villagers fled to southern France seeking refuge from the conflict. In December 1914 families like Vandamme Brice Vanhove and Domine found sanctuary in the Basses-Pyrénées. The war’s impact is palpable even today. The numerous fortifications bear witness to the battles fought. Casemates 147 106 358 330 and command post 334 stand as tangible reminders. They represent German and British defensive positions. They represent the intense fighting that occurred in this area.

Today Ennetiéres-en-Weppes thrives. It’s a vibrant community preserving its heritage. The restored church of Saint-Martin stands tall. Chapels dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Deliverance add to its religious character. Calvaries and fortified works further enrich the landscape.
