Nine eager students. That’s how it all began for Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 in 1914. Imagine those young faces, full of anticipation, gathering at a rented house near the Petaling Train Station. Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 wasn’t always the grand institution you see today. Its story is deeply intertwined with the history of Kampung Petaling, nestled between Kuala Lumpur and Klang. Before Kampung Petaling thrived, Batu Tiga, now known as Damansara, was a bustling hub. As Batu Tiga grew, a Malay school was established there in 1908. Children from Kampung Petaling would journey by train to attend. As Kampung Petaling expanded, the community requested a local school. The Selangor government responded by renting Tuan Haji Baharudin’s house. Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 officially opened on April 7, 1914, under the leadership of Cikgu Kasim bin Lebai. Only nine boys enrolled initially, many having previously attended the Batu Tiga school. Within two months, enrollment swelled to 56 students, reaching 58 by year’s end. Fifteen of those students completed Darjah 5, the highest level in Malay schools before World War II. By 1916, Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 had a permanent home on Lot No. 811, strategically located at the intersection of Kuala Lumpur, Klang, and Petaling Station Road. The school faced the Petaling Post Office. The student population continued to grow. In 1926, a 50-foot extension gave the building an “L” shape. Following World War II, the school experienced an explosion in enrollment. Temporary structures were erected to accommodate the influx of students. A 22×90-foot building was added in 1948, followed by an 18×28-foot building in 1954. In 1955, a 36×30-foot building joined the campus. The year 1956 saw the introduction of free “National Stream” classes, requiring yet another building. Despite these additions, space remained tight. By 1960, Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 had almost 900 students and 36 teachers. Double sessions, morning and afternoon, became necessary. The need for a new building was finally addressed in early 1964. From humble beginnings in a rented house to a vital community institution, Sekolah Kebangsaan Petaling 1 stands as a testament to the power of education and community spirit.
