The USS Grayling itself was a remarkable vessel. Commissioned in March 1941 it was over 300 feet long. It was armed with ten torpedo tubes and carried 24 torpedoes. The Grayling played a crucial role in the Battle of Midway. It also supplied the Philippine resistance. It sank its last ship on August 27 1943. Sadly contact with the Grayling was lost after September 9 1943. Seventy-six brave crew members were lost at sea.

This memorial isn’t just about the USS Grayling. It remembers all submarines and crew lost during WWII. Over 3500 submariners perished. One in five submariners never returned home. Their sacrifice was immense. They represented only 2% of naval personnel yet inflicted 55% of Japan’s maritime losses. The memorial serves as a solemn reminder of their courage.

Every September a moving Tolling of the Boats ceremony takes place here. The names of every lost boat are read. A bell tolls for each. It’s a deeply emotional tribute. The ceremony is a vital part of keeping their memory alive. The USS Grayling Memorial is more than just a monument. It’s a place of reflection. It’s a place to honor the ultimate sacrifice.
