Can a house breathe history? Here at the Fondation Lionel-Groulx, it certainly feels that way. This isn’t just any building. It’s the former residence of Lionel Groulx himself, the influential Quebec historian and intellectual. The Fondation Lionel-Groulx, established in 1956, is dedicated to promoting Quebec’s history, culture, and French language. It occupies a prominent place among Quebec organizations dedicated to sharing historical knowledge. Originally, the Fondation Lionel-Groulx was created to support two of Groulx’s projects: the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française (IHAF) and its associated journal. Interestingly, Groulx himself harbored concerns about the future of these institutions, fearing ideological clashes with a new generation of historians.

After Groulx’s death in 1967, his niece and secretary, Juliette Lalonde-Rémillard, became the director general. The Fondation Lionel-Groulx inherited Groulx’s house at 261 Bloomfield Avenue, along with his copyrights, personal archives, and library. To systematize its research efforts, the Fondation created the Centre de recherche Lionel-Groulx (CRLG) in 1976. This center, a separate legal entity, focused on promoting the study and research of French Canadian history. The Fondation Lionel-Groulx has seen its share of controversy. The Delisle-Richler affair of the 1990s, with accusations of antisemitism against Groulx, had a lasting impact on public perception and the Fondation’s financial stability.

In the face of financial challenges in 2009, the Fondation Lionel-Groulx closed its research center and transferred its archives to Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). This move drew criticism from some historians who feared the loss of expertise. The Fondation Lionel-Groulx underwent a significant restructuring in 2010, refocusing its mission to promote Quebec’s history, language, and culture. Under Pierre Graveline’s direction, it adopted a governance model based on multi-year action plans. Today, the Fondation Lionel-Groulx prioritizes promoting Quebec history through partnerships with organizations like Québecor and the Mouvement Desjardins. It plays an active role in promoting quality history education and creates original content for its website. It even received a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation in 2019 to improve Quebec-related content on Wikipedia. The Fondation Lionel-Groulx continues to evolve, adapting to the changing times while remaining dedicated to its core mission of preserving and promoting Quebec’s unique heritage.
