Who knew a church could have such a rich history? This is the First Christian Reformed Church in Denver. Right here on South Emerson Street this unassuming building has witnessed over a century of faith.
Founded in 1907 the First Christian Reformed Church began its journey. Mr Klaas Van Wyk initially led services in his home. Imagine the intimate gatherings that took place. Then came Reverend Idzerd van Dellen the church’s first official minister. He laid the foundation for the congregation’s growth and development.
The church has had fifteen pastors in its history. That’s a lot of spiritual guidance. Each pastor contributed to the unique identity of First Christian Reformed Church. Reverend Joel Schreurs is the current pastor. He’s leading the church into a new era.
Interestingly 90 percent of the members don’t live in the immediate neighborhood. Denver’s high cost of living forced many to move to the suburbs. This creates a unique challenge for the church. Its mission involves reaching out to both its suburban members and the downtown community. The church actively engages in outreach programs. They use the resources of various CRC agencies to help them reach a wider audience.
