In 1914, a company named Jurid GmbH was born in Düsseldorf. This company, now known as Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH, would become a giant in the brake pad industry. Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH supplies brake pads to major vehicle and brake manufacturers worldwide. Astonishingly, every third car globally has Jurid brake pads. The company’s journey took a turn in the 1950s. The founding family sold it to a brother of Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. This led to a relocation in 1957. Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH moved from Düsseldorf to Glinde, near Hamburg, into a former crankshaft factory. Ownership changed hands again. The Bohlen family sold shares to the American Bendix Corp., which fully acquired Jurid in 1975. This resulted in a series of name changes, from AlliedSignal Bremsbelag to Honeywell Bremsbelag after a merger in 1999. In 2014, Federal Mogul took over. Then, in 2018, Tenneco acquired Federal Mogul, adding another layer to the company’s history. Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH wasn’t always a champion of environmental protection and worker safety. During the production of asbestos-containing brakes, workers were exposed to asbestos dust without protection. This dangerous practice continued until 1988. Even into the 1970s, foul-smelling clouds drifted towards Hamburg residential areas. Today, Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH is part of DRiV, a major supplier to leading automotive and commercial original equipment manufacturers. DRiV boasts a broad portfolio of friction products and is a leader in zero-copper friction solutions. They were the first to market with this technology, showcasing their ability to adapt to the changing industry landscape. Federal-Mogul Bremsbelag GmbH’s journey, from a small company in Düsseldorf to a global player, is a testament to its resilience and adaptability.
