How about a maritime adventure that spans continents? That’s precisely what Föhrde Reederei Seetouristik offers. It stands as a testament to Flensburg’s rich maritime history. This company has evolved from humble beginnings into a global ferry operator.

Föhrde Reederei Seetouristik, or FRS as it is commonly known, started in 1866. Initially, it was a regional passenger ferry. Over time, FRS expanded its reach. It became a major international business group. Now, it is a leading ferry operator in Europe.

The story of FRS is one of continuous growth. In 1935, Flensburg merchants established Föhrde-Reederei GmbH. This was to continue the Flensburg-Ekensund steamship company’s traffic. The company had faced difficulties but had started in 1866. In 1958, KG Seetouristik GmbH was founded. These two companies merged in 1991. This created Föhrde Reederei Seetouristik GmbH & Co. KG. The merger was in response to the end of duty-free shopping. The company was renamed FRS GmbH & Co. KG in 2020.

Picture this: the year is 1979. Föhrde-Reederei takes over the Römö-Sylt ferry service. This marked a significant expansion. After German reunification in 1991, FRS acquired Weiße Flotte GmbH in Stralsund. This further strengthened its position in the Baltic Sea.

FRS’s expansion continued into the 21st century. In 2000, catamaran services began in the Strait of Gibraltar. This connected Spain and Morocco. By 2008, FRS operated high-speed catamarans for the Sultanate of Oman. The company ventured into offshore wind farm support in 2002. They founded FRS Offshore GmbH & Co. KG. A joint venture with Windcat Workboats followed in 2012. This created FRS WindCat Offshore Logistics GmbH.

In 2016, FRS acquired Clipper Navigation Inc. This Seattle-based company operated ferry lines in North America. That same year, services started between Miami and Bimini in the Bahamas. In 2020, FRS took over Elbfähre Glückstadt-Wischhafen GmbH & Co. KG. They also acquired Suomen Saaristokuljetus Oy. This now operates as FRS Finland. FRS Baltic was founded in the same year. It used the high-speed catamaran Skane Jet. This filled the gap left by the discontinued Sassnitz–Trelleborg Königslinie. However, this connection ended on September 30, 2024. In 2021, FRS Portugal began offering tourist tours in the port of Lisbon. In late 2024 and early 2025, FRS acquired two ferry companies on the Rhine. This expanded its ferry connections across the river.

Today, FRS boasts a fleet of around 70 vessels. These vessels include conventional ferries and high-speed ferries. They transport millions of passengers and vehicles each year. With approximately 2,000 employees worldwide, FRS has 17 subsidiaries. These are located across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and North America. FRS is headquartered right here in Flensburg.

FRS specializes in ferry and catamaran operations. It also focuses on offshore logistics and port management. They offer crewing and maritime consulting services. Its fleet includes fast ferries, combi-ferries, conventional passenger ferries, and double-ended car ferries. They even have solar ferries and crew transfer vessels.

Looking back, FRS’s journey from a regional ferry operator. It shows how strategic vision and adaptability can lead to global success. The Dethleffsen family, based in Flensburg, is the largest shareholder. They hold 50% through their HGDF Familienholding GmbH & Co. KG. This Flensburg-based family has a long history in the rum industry.

FRS stands as a symbol of Flensburg’s maritime spirit. From local routes to international waters. Its story reflects a commitment to innovation and excellence. So, as you explore Flensburg, remember the incredible journey of FRS. It is a local company that connects the world.
