What if walls could talk? The Jackson Memorial Church of God has witnessed decades of San Diego’s history. It has seen countless prayers, songs, and celebrations. The Jackson Memorial Church of God stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It represents a beacon of hope for the community it serves.
The Jackson Memorial Church of God traces its roots back to the early 20th century. Elder James A. Jackson arrived in San Diego with a mission. He aimed to establish the first Church of God in Christ in the city. He found a group of believers already worshiping in San Diego. They began their journey together in a humble upstairs room. This marked the beginning of the Jackson Memorial Church of God. A generous Mr. Alexander provided financial support for their first location on 16th Street, between K and J Streets.
Elder Jackson also took his ministry to the streets. The congregation grew. They soon required a larger space. This led them to 1705 Logan Avenue. They erected a tent while they built a new church. The church building was completed in 1926. It still stands at that location today. The dedication ceremony was a momentous occasion. The late Bishop C.H. Mason and Overseer E.M. Wilson officiated. Later in 1926, Elder Jackson felt called to minister elsewhere. Several pastors led the Jackson Memorial Church of God after his departure. These included Elders W.G. Laws, S.M. Crouch, W.O. Mays, G. Lee, P. Gipson, C.T. James, H.C. Colton, J. Tilly, and E.M. Wilson. In 1935, Bishop S.M. Crouch requested Elder Jackson’s return to San Diego. Elder Jackson continued his ministry at the church until his passing. Elders V.D. Rhodes and P.L. Locket then served as pastors.
In 1947, Elder J.A. Blake, Sr. became the pastor. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant growth. They eventually outgrew the Logan Avenue location. The church purchased land at 38th and Oceanview. Construction began in 1956 and was completed in 1957. The mortgage was burned in a triumphant ceremony in 1964, less than ten years after breaking ground. Bishop J.A. Blake, Sr. held numerous leadership positions within the Church of God in Christ. His service included District Superintendent, Chairman of the Elders Council, and Bishop. He was also appointed Presiding Bishop of Southern California Jurisdiction #1 in 1976. Many ministries and churches grew out of Jackson Memorial under his guidance.
Bishop J.A. Blake, Sr. passed away in 1984. His son, Elder J.A. Blake, Jr., succeeded him. The church continued to thrive under his leadership. The church transitioned into the Fountain of Life COGIC under Bishop J.A. Blake, Jr. This reflected a renewed vision for the church. It also honored the legacy of Bishop J.A. Blake, Sr.
The Jackson Memorial Church of God has a rich history. It represents a journey of faith, growth, and community impact. It has been a spiritual home for generations. The church’s enduring presence stands as a testament to its importance in San Diego.
