Did the Kapitänhaus always command such a peaceful view? Here we stand before the Kapitänhaus on the Flensburg Fjord. It’s now a tranquil residential building. But its past echoes with a different kind of energy. The Kapitänhaus wasn’t always known by this name. Built in 1937, it was originally called the “Landanschlusszentrale Nord”. This imposing structure, constructed of the same red brick as its neighbors, stands at a diagonal to the fjord. A deliberate design choice, setting it apart from the row of buildings lining the waterfront.

The Kapitänhaus initially served as a “Torpedo-Feuerleithaus” for the German Navy. It was linked to the Mürwiker Torpedoschule. While the precise function of this “fire control house” remains a mystery, it likely facilitated target practice on moving sea targets. The torpedo school’s operations ceased with the end of World War II in 1945. The building later housed the harbormaster. This is where its current name, Kapitänhaus, originates.

The Kapitänhaus witnessed a significant transformation following the German Navy’s departure after the Cold War. The original single-story wings, present in earlier photographs, were demolished after 2000. A major renovation between 2004 and 2006 saw the main building restored. Two new, symmetrical two-story wings replaced the old ones. The Kapitänhaus was then converted into apartments. Today, it boasts a gross floor area of 1750 square meters and a gross volume of 6570 cubic meters. The building is now recognized as a cultural monument. Its historical, artistic, and urban planning significance has earned it protected status.

From the Kapitänhaus, the view extends across the water to the Nordmole of Sonwik. Interestingly, the family who owns Nord-Schrott, a Flensburg company, once lived in the Kapitänhaus before building on the Nordmole around 2016/17. A poignant reminder of the intertwined histories of this area. And on the east side of the Kapitänhaus you’ll find the Antrax memorial stone, a sobering reminder of a darker chapter. Nearby, the former heating plant and workshop buildings now house the “Das James” hotel. Opened in July 2020, this modern hotel incorporates parts of the old structures. The Kapitänhaus stands as a testament to Flensburg’s rich and evolving history. From naval operations to peaceful residences, it has seen it all.
