The towers reach 170 meters. With its spires, the Umeda Sky Building reaches 190 meters. Hiroshi Hara designed these towers. Takenaka Corporation constructed them. The Umeda Sky Building officially opened on March 25, 1993.
Conceived in 1988, the Umeda Sky Building was to be the “City of Air” project. It was planned as a mixed-use skyscraper. Originally, it was to have four interconnected towers. Economic troubles reduced the plan to two towers.
Hiroshi Hara envisioned two concepts. First, he wanted a modern city landmark. He drew inspiration from the Grande Arche in Paris. Second, he wanted a “floating city” image. This vision includes open-air amenities. It also features viewing decks. These decks offer views of the Umeda district and Osaka.
Construction involved innovative techniques. The sky deck was raised using hydraulic elevators. This was a first for such a project. The glass escalators were also installed using this system.
The Umeda Sky Building is part of Shin-Umeda City. This is a 4.34-hectare mixed-use area. It includes the Westin Osaka. It is near Osaka Station and Umeda Station. Both are busy transport hubs.
The highlight is the Kuchu Teien Observatory. It’s also known as the Floating Garden Observatory. This two-floor observatory has Café Sky 40. It also features the Fence of Vows. The building’s base has the Island Garden. There is also the Vegetable Garden. You can find walking trails and water features there.
The Umeda Sky Building is popular for wedding proposals. Its summit offers stunning views. The observatory was renovated for its 25th anniversary in 2018.
Sekisui House is the owner. They are also the main tenant. Mazda has an office there too. The German consulate-general is on the 35th floor. AstraZeneca also has offices in the East Tower. Even PlatinumGames calls this building home.
