Heinrich Meister

Born in modest circumstances, Heinrich Meister’s life began far from the grandeur of Hanover. This grave marks the final resting place of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in German politics. Heinrich Meister, born in Hildesheim in 1842, began his working life in a cigar factory. He quickly became involved in the burgeoning labor movement, co-founding the General German Cigar Workers’ Association in 1865. Heinrich Meister dedicated his life to improving the lives of working-class people. He tirelessly advocated for workers’ rights, rising through the ranks of the labor movement to become a key figure in the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Meister’s influence extended beyond the factory floor. He served as a member of the Reichstag, the German parliament, representing Hanover from 1884 until his death in 1906. His election in 1884 was a significant victory, even garnering support from the National Liberal Party. This win solidified his position as a powerful voice for the working class in Hanover. The inscription on his tombstone, a gift from the Social Democratic Electoral Association of Linden, reads, “To the tireless champion for the rights of the proletariat.” Heinrich Meister’s journey from cigar maker to Reichstag representative is a testament to his dedication and unwavering commitment to social justice. He remains a significant figure in Hanover’s history, his legacy etched in stone in this very cemetery.
