What is a hutong? It is an alley flanked by courtyards on both sides. These courtyards are called siheyuan. The passages between them form the hutong. Today we are exploring Taiping Hutong.

Taiping Hutong embodies Beijing’s rich history. It reflects the evolution of the city’s culture. Ancient capital culture is here. Revolutionary culture thrives. Old Beijing culture persists. Taiping Hutong shows Beijing’s spirit and flair. Walking here you step back in time.

Taiping Hutong sits in Jinrongjie Sub-district. It stretches west from Xisi South Street. It ends at Taipingqiao Street. Its full length reaches 805 meters. Taiping Hutong holds a special place as one of Beijing’s oldest hutongs.

Taiping Hutong served varied roles across dynasties. During the Yuan Dynasty, it thrived as an opera hub. Later in the Qing Dynasty, it became a military area. In modern times, it transformed into a residential neighborhood.

Life changes and warfare impacted Taiping Hutong. Only a portion remains well-preserved. The 312-meter eastern section shows its history. Research indicates that 29 hutongs existed in Dadu. Dadu was the Yuan Dynasty’s capital. Taiping Hutong stands out. It is the only one documented through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Taiping Hutong carries the title of Beijing’s hutong root.

The hutongs create a chessboard pattern. This neat design suited the heart of the country. Strict urban planning rules shaped Beijing. The siheyuan’s form ensured order.

Many famous writers resided in Taiping Hutong during the 19th century. Lu Xun moved to number 61 after separating from his brother. That number is now 84. He lived there for about 10 months. He worked on novels during that time. Zhang Henshui also lived here. He was another important writer. Lu Xun’s mother enjoyed Zhang Henshui’s novels. His works painted vivid pictures of their time.

Today Taiping Hutong has houses close together. Old trees stand tall. It has transformed into a typical Beijing hutong. Yet it holds stories of the past.
