“Cone” might seem like an odd thing to name a place after. Yet, here we are in Bangkruai Municipality.
Bangkruai a district in Nonthaburi province boasts a rich history. This vibrant area wasn’t always known as Bangkruai. In 1904, it was established as Bang Yai. Administering such a large area proved challenging. In 1917, the northern part was split off. It became the minor district of Bang Mae Nang. Bang Mae Nang gained full district status in 1921.
A significant change occurred on October 19, 1930. The district was renamed Bang Kruai. The name reflects the geographic shape of the district. Kruai is the Thai word for cone. On the same day Bang Mae Nang received the old name Bang Yai.
Bangkruai sits in the southern part of Nonthaburi. It shares borders with several districts. These include Bang Yai and Mueang Nonthaburi. It also borders districts of Bangkok. Bang Sue, Bang Phlat, and Taling Chan are among them. Phutthamonthon in Nakhon Pathom province also neighbors it.
Administratively, Bangkruai is divided into nine sub-districts. These sub-districts contain 60 villages. Bang Kruai itself gained town status in 2002. Plai Bang became a township in 1999. Sala Klang achieved township status in 2008. Bang Si Thong has been a township since 2013.
This region plays a vital environmental role. Bangkruai serves as a natural habitat. It is home to the Alexandrine and red-breasted parakeets. These parrots live in groups. They reside on large trees. You can often spot them at local temples. Wat Suan Yai and Wat Utthayan are a couple of examples.
The Bang Kruai subdistrict itself is quite populated. In 2020, it had over 27000 residents. That is a population density of over 6700 people per square kilometer. The Bang Kruai Town Municipality covers the entire subdistrict.
