Could these intriguing structures truly represent the spirit of Maia? Right before your eyes stands the Monumento à Comunidade Maiata. Locals affectionately call it the “Pyramids of Maia”. This striking sculpture, inaugurated on July 16, 1988, embodies the vibrancy and growth of the community here in Maia. The Monumento à Comunidade Maiata is a testament to the town’s elevation to city status in 1986. While the architect Luís Filipe Pais de Figueiredo designed the monument’s overall form, the sculptor Zulmiro de Carvalho brought the artistic vision to life. Now, here’s an intriguing detail. Some believe the thirteen pyramids symbolize Maia’s thirteen parishes. However, this interpretation sparks debate! At the time of the monument’s creation, Maia actually comprised seventeen parishes, not thirteen. Today, after some reorganization, Maia consists of ten parishes. Nevertheless, the Monumento à Comunidade Maiata stands as a powerful symbol of this community, its history, and its aspirations, regardless of the exact number of pyramids.
