The clang of steel echoes in my memory. I remember the rhythmic thud of hammers a symphony of creation. This is Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft a name synonymous with shipbuilding excellence. Founded in 1872 by five local shipowners it reflects a history deeply intertwined with Flensburg. Initially these forward-thinking entrepreneurs sent their ships to England for construction. They soon realized the potential of building locally. Their vision transformed Flensburg’s maritime landscape.

Their first creation the iron tall ship Doris Brodersen launched in 1875 marked a pivotal moment. A year later the Septima their first steamer joined the fleet. This marked the beginning of a legacy. Over the years Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft built more than 700 vessels. These ranged from cargo steamers and motor vessels to sailing ships barges and even submarines. They built ships for numerous navies around the world including the German Navy. The company constructed the Deutschland and Bremen two merchant submarines during World War I.

The shipyard wasn’t immune to the ebb and flow of the market. In 1990 Egon Oldendorff acquired Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft. A management buyout in 2008 marked a turning point. The shipyard faced financial difficulties. However Lars Windhorst’s Sapinda Holding stepped in during 2019 acquiring a majority stake. This bold move prevented the shipyard from bankruptcy. The takeover was completed by Tennor Holding B.V.

Despite this rescue the company wasn’t entirely free of troubles. Delays in construction including the Honfleur and a contract termination with TT-Line in 2020 presented challenges. In 2021 Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft expanded its reach. They acquired the Nobiskrug superyacht shipyard in Rendsburg. Unfortunately in December 2024 the company filed for bankruptcy.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft’s story is more than just ships. It’s a narrative of entrepreneurship resilience and innovation. It’s a story etched in the very steel of the ships it built. A testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and push the boundaries of maritime engineering. It’s a legacy that continues to shape Flensburg’s identity. Its echoes will reverberate for generations to come.
