Uptown

In the 1800s, when Texas was still a part of Mexico, Uptown Houston was a key stop on the San Felipe Trail used by Stephen F. Austin’s “Original 300 Colonists.” Uptown was then a rural area. It was home to estates and Italian immigrant families. They cultivated vegetables along Post Oak Boulevard, a street now synonymous with Houston’s high-fashion retail. After World War II, visionaries like William Farrington, Gerald D. Hines, and Giorgio Borlenghi began transforming Uptown. They shaped it into the urban center we see today. Uptown Houston is a bustling business district just 6.2 miles west of Downtown Houston. It’s centered along Post Oak Boulevard and Westheimer Road. Uptown covers over 1,000 acres. It’s a significant force in Houston’s economy. With 23.6 million square feet of office space, Uptown is the 17th-largest business district in the United States. This puts it on par with the downtowns of Denver and Pittsburgh. Uptown Houston houses around 2,000 companies. It represents more than 11% of Houston’s total office space. Uptown isn’t just about business. It’s also a major retail hub. Uptown Houston boasts 5 million square feet of retail space. It is a center for high-fashion. Numerous trendy shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues fill the district. The crown jewel of Uptown Houston’s retail scene is The Galleria. It is the largest shopping mall in Texas and the seventh largest in the United States. The Galleria houses many upscale shops, chain stores, restaurants, and even an indoor ice skating rink. Uptown also has a rich architectural history. Gerald D. Hines, instrumental in Uptown’s development, is honored with the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park. This iconic landmark, completed in 1983, features a multi-story fountain surrounded by Texas Live Oak trees. The Waterwall continues to be a popular destination and centerpiece of Uptown Houston. The nearby Williams Tower, formerly Transco Tower, dominates Uptown’s skyline. Designed by Philip Johnson, it was once believed to be the tallest skyscraper outside a central business district. Uptown also showcases architectural works by I.M. Pei and César Pelli, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
