Did you ever hear of a university born from conflict? Right here stands Universidade da Paz, or UNPAZ, a testament to the Timorese people’s resilience. UNPAZ emerged from disagreements within the Universidade Dili (UNDIL) after Timor-Leste gained independence from Indonesia in 1999. Led by Professor Lucas da Costa, a respected economist and member of parliament, the founders sought to create a new space for higher learning. Initially operating from temporary locations, UNPAZ eventually established its main campus southwest of Dili’s city center. By 2005, the core buildings were constructed, welcoming hundreds of students. Many of these early students were veterans of the independence struggle, including ex-Falintil guerrillas who had been denied educational opportunities during the conflict. UNPAZ offers a range of degrees, from social sciences and public health to engineering and agricultural technology. It boasts over 150 instructors and 3,500 students. An outreach program extends the university’s reach to Timor-Leste’s rural districts, furthering its mission of accessible education. UNPAZ, like other Timorese universities, has faced its share of challenges. Rebuilding the education sector after the devastation of the late 1990s has been a monumental task. Resources are scarce, and trained personnel are few. The primary language of instruction has been Bahasa Indonesia. While the university receives some national and international aid, it relies heavily on student fees. Developing library resources and stable internet access has been an ongoing effort, often supported by international assistance. Despite these hurdles, UNPAZ continues to grow and adapt. Supported by grants from the European Commission, the campus expands, providing more opportunities for Timorese students. UNPAZ stands as a symbol of hope and a beacon of knowledge, contributing to the ongoing development of Timor-Leste. Its story is a reminder of the power of education in the face of adversity.
