Beneath our feet stretches a tapestry of nature and history, the Breisgauer Bucht. This area is more than just a scenic view. The Breisgauer Bucht is a natural region in southern Baden-Württemberg. Its central natural area is the Freiburger Bucht. You might also hear it called the Freiburger Bucht in a broader sense. Some people call it the Mooswald.

The term Breisgauer Bucht gained prominence in 1966. It was then that the Abwasserzweckverband Breisgauer Bucht was founded. This is a wastewater association. Its treatment plant is located in Forchheim. Jörg Stadelbauer described the Breisgauer Bucht in 1980. He defined it as the area between the Rhine and the Vorbergzone. The Kaiserstuhl borders it. The Lahr-Emmendinger-Vorbergzone forms another boundary. The Rhine and the Black Forest-Hauptverwerfung mark its limits. The Markgräflerland completes the borders.

The Breisgauer Bucht includes more than just the Freiburger Bucht. It also encompasses other sub-areas. These include the Staufener Bucht. Also, there is the Neumagen-Möhlin-Niederung. The Schönberg Group is part of it. The Tuniberg, Nimberg, and Mengener Brücke are included. Finally, the Elz-Dreisam-Niederung is within its boundaries.

Let’s delve deeper into what makes this area special. The Freiburger Bucht is a natural unit within the Oberrheinisches Tiefland. This is the Upper Rhine Plain around Freiburg im Breisgau. In the manual of natural regional divisions of Germany, it is unit 202. It is sometimes considered a subunit of the Breisgauer Bucht.

The Freiburger Bucht is bordered by several key features. The Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg lie to the west. The Mengener Brücke is to the south. The Vorbergzone with the Black Forest is to the east and northeast. The Riegeler Pforte marks the northern boundary.

Much of the Freiburger Bucht is covered in gravel. This gravel comes from the Black Forest. Several hills rise from this plain. These include the Nimberg with Marchhügel. Also, Lehener Bergle, Mauracher Berg near Denzlingen, and Hunnenbuck. The Blankenberg is another prominent hill.

Geologically, the Freiburger Bucht is different. It’s a deeper fracture zone of the Vorbergzone. This contrasts with the Markgräfler Rheinebene and Offenburger Rheinebene.

The Riegeler Pforte opens the Freiburger Bucht to the north. It leads into the Offenburger Rheinebene. All rivers from the Black Forest flow through this gate. The Dreisam, Glotter, and Elz rivers are among them. They have many tributaries.

Groundwater accumulates near the hills. This happens at the Black Forest foothills, Tuniberg, and Kaiserstuhl. This created large, connected forest areas. Before river corrections in the mid-19th century, these areas were difficult to farm. They were known as Mooswälder.

Potential natural vegetation includes several types of forests. There is the Sternmieren-Stieleichen-Hainbuchenwald. Also, the Traubenkirschen-Eschenwald. In very wet areas, you’ll find Walzenseggen-Schwarzerlen-Bruchwald.

Large, connected forest areas include the Teninger Allmend. The Freiburger Mooswald is another significant area. After the canalization of major rivers, some of these forests were cleared. The Dreisamkanal and Elz with Leopoldskanal were key. The Glotter was diverted via the Lossele to the Elz. The cleared areas became meadows or fields.

Before recent decades, areas near groundwater were managed as grassland. These were often Wässerwiesen. Original arable sites are on the Vorbergschollen. Also, around Teningen or in the Denzlingen-Vörstetten-Gundelfingen triangle. These areas consist of loess-covered lower terrace gravel. Today, many former meadows have been converted into fields.

The Breisgauer Bucht is home to numerous towns and villages. These include Riegel am Kaiserstuhl. Also, Teningen, Emmendingen, and Denzlingen. Reute, Vörstetten, and Gundelfingen are among them. Freiburg im Breisgau, Schallstadt, and Umkirch are included. Gottenheim, March, Bötzingen, and Eichstetten are part of it. Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl completes the list.

So, as we stand here, remember the geological forces. Recall the human impact that shaped this unique landscape. The Breisgauer Bucht is a living testament. It shows the interplay between nature and culture.
