Forty years. That’s how long UQAM Laval has been a part of the Laval community. It began in 1983. UQAM Laval started in the Banque d’épargne building. Later in 1987, UQAM Laval moved to Saint-Maxime high school. Then in 1999, it relocated to Collège Montmorency. In 2019, UQAM Laval found its permanent home. It is now located in the Guy-Rocher pavilion at Collège Montmorency.
UQAM Laval is a key part of UQAM. UQAM itself was founded in 1969. The Quebec government created UQAM. It was formed by merging École des beaux-arts de Montréal, Collège Sainte-Marie and other schools. UQAM is the largest part of the Université du Québec system. Still, UQAM has the independence to choose its rector.
UQAM Laval offers many programs. There are about 20 programs. These include both undergraduate and graduate studies. You can study management sciences here. Education sciences are offered too. Arts, communications and human sciences are also available.
UQAM welcomes many international students. In 2018, UQAM had over 40,000 students. Almost 4,000 were international students. They came from 95 countries. UQAM offers many programs of study managed by six faculties and one school. These faculties include Arts, Education and Communication. Political Science and Law are also included. So are Science and Social Science. The School of Management is also popular. UQAM offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. It is one of Montreal’s two French-language universities.
Many public figures in Laval have graduated from UQAM. These include Laval mayor Stéphane Boyer. Former Member of the National Assembly Benoit Fradet is also an alumnus. Bernard Pitre from Laval économique and Aline Dib, a municipal councillor, also attended UQAM. Nearly 28,000 UQAM graduates have taken courses at the Laval campus. Over 6,500 completed their programs almost entirely in Laval.
UQAM is committed to accessibility. Its presence in Laval shows this. UQAM continues to build connections with the community. It meets the training needs of Laval residents. It also addresses the region’s development challenges.
UQAM also engages in research. It partners with the Laval community. These partnerships focus on the environment. Urban planning and sustainable transport are key areas. Economic development and education are also important. UQAM also offers services to the Laval population. These include guidance and special education.
UQAM is known for its unique approach to education. It was a pioneer in developing fields of study. These fields are not traditionally found in academia. UQAM has expertise in public relations and actuarial science. Sexology and social law are also areas of strength. Design, visual arts and feminist studies are also notable. So is social economy. UQAM is advancing knowledge in health and earth and atmospheric sciences. It is truly a special place of learning.
