Ever wondered how an airport nestled on a Baltic island plays a crucial role in connecting its residents to the mainland? Bornholm Airport, located just 5 kilometers southeast of Rønne on the picturesque island of Bornholm, has a story to tell. Bornholm Airport may be small, but its history is surprisingly rich. It began in 1935 when representatives from the Danish parliament, the Rønne municipality, and Det Danske Luftfartsselskab (DDL), which later became part of Scandinavian Airlines System, decided to create an air link between Rønne and Copenhagen. The company A/S Den bornholmske Flyveplads was established in 1936, and construction of Bornholm Airport started the following year. The first route began operating in 1939 under a temporary license. However, runway issues caused a brief suspension of flights. Bornholm Airport officially opened on November 16, 1940, with DDL running a daily service to Copenhagen. A temporary terminal was built in 1941. A proper terminal building wasn’t constructed until 1961. In 1947, the Danish state assumed control of Bornholm Airport, renaming it Rønne Airport. The name changed again in 1992 to Bornholm Airport to promote the island as a tourist destination. Maersk Air, later part of Sterling Airlines, took over operations in 1982. Due to substantial losses, Maersk Air ceased operating the route in 2002. Cimber Air then took over. In 2005, Danish Air Transport became the second carrier at Bornholm Airport, increasing competition. They briefly abandoned the Copenhagen-Bornholm route in 2008. They resumed service after Cimber Sterling’s bankruptcy in 2012. Today, Bornholm Airport serves as a vital link, connecting islanders and visitors to various destinations. It stands as a testament to the island’s commitment to accessibility and connectivity, offering a convenient gateway to the beauty and charm of Bornholm.
