Is it possible for a building to stand as both a sanctuary and a testament to a city’s history? Here before us stands Sankt Nikolai. It is Flensburg’s main church. It is named after the patron saint of seafarers, Nicolaus.

Sankt Nikolai isn’t just Flensburg’s biggest church. It’s one of the tallest in Schleswig-Holstein. Its steeple soars 90 meters high. It towers over the old town roofs. Imagine the view from up there. It’s a heavenly height offering serenity.

Let’s journey back to Sankt Nikolai’s origins. Construction spanned from 1390 to 1480. The result was a three-aisled stepped hall church. Massive round pillars support its weight. The original church likely dates back to 1300. The current building was merged with it. The original structure was later torn down.

Sankt Nikolai is an “Open Church”. Its doors welcome visitors daily. It stands as a highlight on the European Route of Brick Gothic. But its allure goes beyond architecture.

Step inside Sankt Nikolai. You’ll discover treasures crafted by local artists. Hinrich Ringeringk and Peter Hansen left their mark here. The church organ dates back to the early 1600s. Ringeringk created its facade. It features the coat of arms of Christian IV and Queen Anna Cathrine. The organ underwent restoration in 2008-09. A.P. Møller and Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond funded it.

Peter Hansen also created the baptismal font in 1497. Similar fonts by him reside in Haderslev and Aarhus cathedrals. The large basin is supported by the four evangelists.

Sophie, daughter of King Valdemar Sejr, has her gravestone in Sankt Nikolai. She came to Flensburg to reconcile her brothers Abel and Erik Plovpenning.

But here is a little-known fact: The front case of the organ hides two organs in one. This unique build is significant. You can sometimes hear this spectacular instrument being played.

Sankt Nikolai stands as a symbol. It embodies Flensburg’s history and artistry. It is a testament to faith and community. Take a moment to appreciate its grandeur. Reflect on the stories held within its walls. Sankt Nikolai is more than a church. It’s a Flensburg icon.
