Beneath the bustling streets lies an aquatic world waiting to be explored. Welcome to the Aquarium Berlin, one of Germany’s largest and most biodiverse aquariums. Built in 1913 as part of the Berlin Zoological Garden complex, this stand-alone attraction is home to over 9000 animals spanning 800 species.

Before you stretches a building adorned with depictions of prehistoric animals. This remarkable facade, created by painter Heinrich Harder, hints at the wonders within. The Aquarium Berlin has a long history. The original aquarium was founded in 1869 by zoologist Alfred Brehm. It stood on Unter den Linden but moved to this location in 1911 and 1913.

World War II brought devastation. A bomb nearly destroyed the building. But like Berlin itself, the Aquarium Berlin rose from the ashes. Now, it stands as a testament to the city’s resilience and dedication to showcasing the natural world.

Inside, prepare to be amazed by the sheer variety of life. The exhibits spread across three floors. Each level unveils a different ecosystem. Start your journey on the lower floor. Here, you’ll plunge into the depths of the ocean. Marvel at colorful fish darting among coral reefs. Delicate jellyfish pulse gently through the water. Seahorses dance in the currents.

The highlight of this level is the 260000-litre Shark Tank. Blacktip reef sharks, hammerhead sharks, and nurse sharks glide effortlessly through the water. It is an awe-inspiring sight. Ascend to the second level to enter Crocodile Hall. This realm is ruled by reptiles. Crocodiles lurk in the shadows. Turtles bask under heat lamps. Caiman lizards and gharials add to the diversity. Even butterflies flutter through this hall.

The top level houses an insectarium. Discover a world of amphibians and insects. Frogs hop among the foliage. Ants scurry along complex trails. Tarantulas lurk in their webs. Praying mantises stand motionless. Keep an eye above as some ant trails even run along the ceiling.

The Aquarium Berlin is dedicated to the breeding of jellyfish. It breeds around 15 different species. The keeping and breeding of jellyfish is no easy task. These creatures are highly sensitive and have very precise requirements. A sophisticated system of nozzles keeps the jellyfish in constant suspension. If they sink to the bottom, the consequences could be fatal.

Before you leave, don’t miss the petting pool. Here, children and adults can gently touch Japanese Koi carps. Remember the Aquarium Berlin is more than just a collection of tanks. It’s a journey through the world’s aquatic ecosystems. The Aquarium Berlin plays a vital role in education and conservation.
