Ever wonder where Berlin’s oldest academic teaching building still stands? That’s right here. Welcome to the Anatomisches Theater der Tierarzneischule.

This building whispers tales of science, art and history. It is more than just old bricks and mortar. The Anatomisches Theater der Tierarzneischule stands as a testament to Berlin’s rich academic past.

Picture this: it’s the late 18th century. King Frederick William II wants to improve veterinary medicine. He commissions Carl Gotthard Langhans to design a special building. Langhans also designed the Brandenburg Gate. The result? The Tieranatomisches Theater, completed in 1790. Its design borrowed from classical architecture. It became a stage for the emerging science of veterinary medicine.

Initially, the Tieranatomisches Theater served to combat animal epidemics. Especially horse diseases were a concern. Later, it became a training ground for future veterinarians. Professors dissected animal carcasses in the main hall. A special lift transported these bodies from the ground floor. The hall resembles an amphitheater. Rows of white wooden seats ascend in a semicircle. Above, a dome displays paintings of rural life with animals and people. Light streamed through the glass-covered opening. This illuminated the dissection table below.

Over the years, the Tieranatomisches Theater saw many changes. In 1874, an annex was added for autopsies. In 1920, food science moved into the building. It became part of the Humboldt University in 1949. Lectures and events took place here for many years.

By the early 21st century, the building needed serious help. A major renovation began in 2005. It was completed in 2012. The restored Tieranatomisches Theater reopened. Today, the Hermann von Helmholtz-Zentrum für Kulturtechnik uses it. It serves as a space for exhibitions. These exhibitions explore the intersection of science and design.

Inside, you’ll find a permanent exhibition. It showcases the building’s 200-year history. The exhibits highlight the connections between various university collections. Interactive displays enhance the experience. Film installations and audio pieces add to the museum feel.

The Tieranatomisches Theater is more than a museum. It’s a bridge between past and present. It is a place where science meets art. It is a place where history comes alive.

Before you leave, notice the classicist architecture. Reflect on the building’s original purpose. Think about the many students who learned within these walls. Consider the blend of science and art that defines this space. The Tieranatomisches Theater is a unique piece of Berlin’s cultural landscape. It’s a place where the past continues to inspire the future. And admission is free.
