Gazing upon Sankt Ansgar Church, one might sense a quiet strength. This isn’t the oldest church in Flensburg, but it holds a special place in the hearts of many. Sankt Ansgar Church, also known as Ansgarkirche in German and Ansgar Kirke in Danish, serves the largest congregation within the Danish Church in Southern Schleswig. The church’s namesake, Saint Ansgar, the Apostle of the North, echoes in the building’s modern, yet timeless design. The story of Sankt Ansgar begins in the post-war era. In 1949, Pastor Martin Nørgaard envisioned a new spiritual home for the growing community in northern Flensburg. Fundraising proved challenging, delaying the purchase of the land until 1962. A generous donation from A.P. Møller and his wife, Chastine Mckinney Møller, finally made the dream a reality. The church’s architecture is partially inspired by Notmark Kirke on the Danish island of Als. The original architect, Kay Fisker, sadly passed away before construction began. His vision was carried forward by Robert Duelund Mortensen and Svend Høgsbroe. Construction commenced in 1966 and concluded in November 1968. Sankt Ansgar is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community of approximately 650 members from around 500 households. Since 2007, the church has held a protected monument status, undergoing renovations in 2008 to preserve its unique character.
