Imagine, if you will, ancient workers carefully placing the iconic 300-ton carved marble slab right here at the Stone Plate. This Stone Plate carries within it a fascinating story of ingenuity and labor.

Today, we are standing before the Stone Plate. It is a testament to ancient Chinese engineering. This was no easy feat. How did they manage to move such a massive stone?

The Stone Plate is a reminder of China’s rich history. The Forbidden City attracts seven million tourists every year. They all marvel at the incredible craftsmanship and the sheer scale of the project.

Historical accounts vary but researchers have clarified the mystery of its transport. A team from Princeton University and Beijing investigated how the stone arrived. They believe workers moved the stone on a wooden sledge. The sledge slid along a track of wet ice. Water likely acted as a lubricant. This method reduced friction.

The Stone Plate was originally much larger. It weighed approximately 300 tons. In 1761, it was re-hewn. This reduced its weight to about 200 tons.

For years, the story told was of 20000 men hauling the Stone Plate. They supposedly spent 28 days digging wells every half kilometer. They poured water to create an ice path. Howard Stone, a professor at Princeton, found this puzzling. There were no known examples of the Chinese hauling heavy stones using sledges. The spoked wheel appeared in China around 1500 BC.

Researchers studied historical documents. They found that sledges were safer. They were also more reliable than wheeled vehicles. This was especially true for stones heavier than 95 tons.

Rolling the Stone Plate on logs would have been impractical. The path was long and likely uneven. Winter conditions made ice a practical choice. Calculations showed the team moved the stone slowly. The speed was around 8 centimeters per second. At that speed, friction wouldn’t melt the ice. Workers likely poured water on the ice. This helped lubricate the sliding surface.

Researchers estimate a team of about 100 people could have moved the Stone Plate. This is a far cry from the tale of 20000 men. The Stone Plate’s journey showcases ancient Chinese technical skill. They understood the properties of ice. They knew how to use it effectively.

This Stone Plate stands as proof of ancient ingenuity. It reminds us that careful planning and knowledge can move mountains or in this case, a 300-ton stone. As you leave, remember the story of the Stone Plate. It is a story of engineering. It is a story of human effort. It is a story etched in stone.
