A 1500 cubic meter water reservoir. That’s what makes the Wasserturm Flensburg-Mürwik tick. But this is far more than just a water tower.
Friends look at the Wasserturm Flensburg-Mürwik. It’s a landmark a symbol of Fruerlund often included in Mürwik. Its unique design earned it the nickname “Blumenvase” the flower vase. Can you see the resemblance?
Construction began in June 1960. It was completed fifteen months later on September 26 1961. The cost? A cool 1 200 000 Deutsche Mark. This wasn’t just about water. Flensburg’s population boomed after World War II. The old water tower couldn’t keep up. Its location meant low water pressure on the east side. A new tower was needed. Though technology existed to manage water pressure without a tower the city chose to build one. Why? Because even without electricity the tower could guarantee water pressure for hours.
Architect Fritz Trautwein designed this beauty. He also worked on the Grindelhochhäuser and the Hamburg TV Tower. The Philipp Holzmann AG built it. The water tower’s height was matched to the old water tower on the west side. The design is stunning. A funnel shape that starts small widens to 24 meters. An observation gallery at 26 meters provides breathtaking views. The turquoise structure is punctuated by 18 white concrete supports. These supports are parabolic sections supporting the entire structure. Inside you find a lift and a staircase. The double-walled concrete Intze tank holds 1500 cubic meters of water. The inner and outer tanks can be filled independently. This was crucial for repairs and maintenance.
The Wasserturm Flensburg-Mürwik isn’t just functional. It is a viewpoint. From May to September you can climb to the top. Enjoy panoramic views of the Volkspark the Marineschule Mürwik its own water tower and the old water tower. See the Flensburg Fjord stretching towards Denmark. Spot the Nikolaikirche Marienkirche St Jürgen Kirche and St Marien Schmerzhafte Mutter churches. Notice the shipyard the Flensburg town hall and the wind turbines across the city. The Wasserturm Flensburg-Mürwik is unique. It’s the only working water tower in Schleswig-Holstein with an accessible observation platform. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Flensburg’s history and ingenuity.
