A fierce struggle unfolds before us at the Reiherkampf Sculpture. Here, frozen in concrete, a heron defends itself against the attack of a large bird of prey. The Reiherkampf Sculpture, meaning “Heron Battle,” depicts this dramatic moment with stark realism. It’s located on the grounds of the Stadtteilschule Bramfeld in Hamburg, gracing the western exterior wall of a classroom building. Kurt Bauer, a German sculptor born in 1906 and who passed away in 1981, created this powerful piece. The Reiherkampf Sculpture was installed in 1959. It was a commission by the city of Hamburg as part of the “Art in Construction” program. This program aimed to integrate art into public buildings. The sculpture spans two stories, measuring approximately two meters in height. It is clearly visible from the Bramfelder Chaussee. The two-part relief depicts the heron locked in mortal combat with its attacker. The dynamism of the scene brings a sense of drama and movement to the school’s façade. The Reiherkampf Sculpture isn’t just a decoration. It’s a reminder of the constant struggle for survival present in the natural world, even within an urban setting like Hamburg-Bramfeld.
