“The source of wisdoms.” That’s the ambitious goal of the Kyoto University Fukui Kenichi Memorial Research Center. This center carries on the philosophy of Professor Kenichi Fukui. He aimed to advance science and create leading theories.

The Fukui Kenichi Memorial Research Center at Kyoto University focuses on cutting-edge basic and applied chemistry. It merges various scientific fields to build next-generation chemical theories. This encourages unique research. The center also supports young researchers. It helps them develop their work.

Kenichi Fukui, born in 1918, was a groundbreaking Japanese chemist. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. He shared it with Roald Hoffmann for their work on chemical reaction mechanisms. Fukui was the first East Asian to win this prize. His research focused on frontier orbitals. These are the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO).

Fukui believed breakthroughs come from unexpected fusions of different fields. He wasn’t initially drawn to chemistry. However, a professor’s advice led him to industrial chemistry at Kyoto Imperial University. He initially found chemistry difficult. It seemed to require too much memorization. He preferred logical approaches.

After graduating in 1941, Fukui worked in the Army Fuel Laboratory during World War II. In 1943, he became a lecturer in fuel chemistry at Kyoto Imperial University. He began as an experimental organic chemist.

From 1951 to 1982, Fukui was a professor of physical chemistry at Kyoto University. He later became president of the Kyoto Institute of Technology. He also directed the Institute for Fundamental Chemistry.

In 1952, Fukui presented his molecular orbital theory of reactivity in aromatic hydrocarbons. Initially, it didn’t receive much attention. He later noted the theoretical foundation was unclear at the time.

The frontier orbitals concept gained recognition after Woodward and Hoffmann’s work in 1965. Their rules predicted reaction rates using molecular symmetry. Fukui acknowledged their work helped him realize the significance of orbital properties.

Fukui developed his ideas before large computers were available for modeling. Besides reaction theory, he contributed to gelation, organic synthesis, and polymerization kinetics. He was critical of Japanese universities. He felt the chair system limited young researchers’ originality. He also urged industry to invest in long-range research.

Fukui’s Nobel Prize-winning work showed reactivity could be approximated by looking at frontier orbitals. He observed that occupied orbitals repel each other. Positive and negative charges attract. Interactions between occupied and unoccupied orbitals cause attraction.

The Fukui Kenichi Memorial Research Center continues this legacy. It fosters innovative research and supports the next generation of chemists. It truly embodies its goal to be “the source of wisdoms.”
