Can you imagine a sports club surviving two world wars and the division of a city? Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke e.V. has done just that. Right here in Altglienicke, this club boasts a history as rich and complex as Berlin itself. Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke e.V. isn’t just about football. It’s a community hub offering volleyball, handball, bowling, gymnastics and activities for seniors. The club’s football team currently competes in the Regionalliga Nordost, the fourth tier of German football. But their journey hasn’t been easy. Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke e.V. traces its roots back to 1883 with the founding of MTV Spiess, a gymnastics club. Over the years, several local clubs merged and evolved, navigating the turbulent political landscape of 20th-century Germany. In 1948, after the ban on organizations by Allied authorities, Altglienicker Sportverein emerged, uniting the members of the old clubs. By 1951, they even had a new stadium. However, East German authorities pressured them to merge with BSG Chemie Adlershof. The club resisted and was forced to change its name to the more politically acceptable Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke. They successfully resisted another merger attempt in the 1960s, this time with BSG Fernsehen. Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke e.V. even faced controversy in 2006 after allegations of anti-Semitic remarks during a match. They were ordered to replay the match and attend anti-racism seminars. This incident underscores the complexities of the club’s journey and the importance of promoting tolerance and respect within the community. Today, Volkssport Gemeinschaft Altglienicke e.V. stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. It has overcome numerous challenges, reflecting the struggles and triumphs of Berlin itself.
