Around 1700 a new name appeared on the map of Dusseldorf. Holthausen. This wasn’t a sudden emergence. Settlements existed here much earlier possibly as far back as the 9th century BC. Continuous habitation started in the 2nd century AD. For centuries it remained a small village. Langenweyer was its name until the 18th century.

Holthausen’s transformation began with industry. The Henkel Company chose Holthausen for its headquarters. This brought significant growth. In 1823 Holthausen had only 322 inhabitants. By 1905 this number exploded to 1884. The peak population was 15000 in 1969. Today around 12000 people call Holthausen home.

Holthausen’s connection to Benrath is notable. From 1909 until 1929 Holthausen was part of Benrath. After 1929 Holthausen officially became a Dusseldorf district. Even now its industrial heritage remains strong. Henkel is still there next to Cognis Group HQ.

The transportation network serves Holthausen well. Two underground lines U74 and U77 run through it. Tram lines 701 and 713 also pass through. Several bus lines connect it to the wider area. Holthausen also benefits from easy access to the A46 highway and the B8 federal road.

For relaxation there’s Heyepark a large forest area. Holthausen also boasts a sports park. These provide green spaces for recreation and exercise. St Joseph’s Catholic Church and St Laurentius Catholic Church stand as religious landmarks. The Protestant Klarenbach Church completes the religious landscape of Holthausen. Holthausen is a place of history industry and community a vibrant part of Dusseldorf.
