Senzōin is a temple of the Takayama school of Shingon Buddhism. It is known as Yakushiōzan. The history of Senzōin is linked to two temples. These are Minami-Senzōin and Senjuji.
Minami-Senzōin’s main deity is Fudō-son. Senjuji’s main deity is Dainichi Nyorai. In 1909 Minami-Senzōin and Senjuji merged. They took one character from each temple’s name. This created Senzōin.
The exact founding dates of Minami-Senzōin and Senjuji are unclear. However Senjuji is said to have been revived in 1725. The revival was led by Dengyō Daishi Jikaku Daishi.
Within the grounds is Daishidō Hall. This hall is site 26 and 27 of the Chiba Temple Toshisenkai Hachijūhakkasho. Site 26 is the former Senjuji. Site 27 is the former Minami-Senzōin.
