Beneath a cerulean sky, the Pinocchio Statue beckons. This whimsical bronze figure, nestled within Takaragaike Park’s Children’s Garden, embodies a special bond between Kyoto and Florence. The Pinocchio Statue commemorates the 50th anniversary of Kyoto and Florence as sister cities. It arrived in October 2015, a gift born from the collaborative efforts of the Kyoto Shimei Lions Club and the Florence Lions Club. These clubs, along with the Galleria Frilli in Florence, wished to foster cultural exchange and youth interaction between the two cities. They chose Pinocchio, the beloved protagonist of the Italian children’s story, as a symbol of this enduring partnership. Pinocchio, originally crafted by sculptor Silvano Porcinai, embodies the spirit of adventure and learning. The statue’s presence in Takaragaike Park transforms the park into a place of dreams and international friendship. The Pinocchio Statue stands as a testament to the power of art to transcend boundaries. It serves as a whimsical reminder of the deep connections forged between distant cities.
