A whisper of history echoes through these halls. The Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Sormani stands before us. It is more than just a library. It is a repository of Milan’s cultural soul.

The Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Sormani started in the late 19th century. It was first housed within Palazzo Marino. The library later moved several times. It resided in the Palazzo dei Giureconsulti. It was also at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale. For a time, it called the Castello Sforzesco home.

World War II dealt a harsh blow. Bombings in 1943 caused significant damage. The book section and card catalogs were destroyed. Thankfully, the periodicals section survived. In 1956, the Biblioteca Centrale found its current home. It is located in Palazzo Sormani. The Palazzo Sormani had also been damaged during the war. It has since been reconstructed.

Today, the Biblioteca Sormani is the heart of Milan’s library system. It includes 24 neighborhood libraries. It even has a Bibliobus. The main building has two floors. These floors are for public services. The Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Sormani also features a book tower. There is also an underground level for book storage. The Biblioteca Sormani possesses external storage facilities. These hold part of its vast collections.

Inside the Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Sormani, you’ll find diverse documents and services. Recent renovations have expanded open shelves. They have created sections for children and teens. There are themed displays and updated reading rooms. The library preserves historical collections. These can only be viewed on-site with special care.

The Biblioteca Sormani boasts a vast collection. In mid-2024, the online catalog listed around 562.595 items. It covers all fields of knowledge. It has strengths in humanities, law, and the arts. The Biblioteca Centrale’s periodical section is extensive. You can find historical newspapers and magazines from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Unique collections include the Stendhal Collection and the Manuscripts Section. These contain archives, books, and graphics. They were acquired through donations. The Stendhal Center holds items that belonged to Stendhal. These are from his time as consul in Civitavecchia. It also features works about the author. The Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Sormani also holds significant archival funds. These mainly date from the late 19th and 20th centuries. There are also diverse audiovisual documents.

Palazzo Sormani itself has a rich history. It was expanded in the 17th century by Cardinal Cesare Monti. Architect Francesco Maria Richini designed the central courtyard. He also designed the grand staircase. In the 18th century, Francesco Croce added a new facade. Benedetto Alfieri designed another facade facing the gardens.

The Sormani family sold the palace in 1783 to the Andreani family. The family was related to the Sormani through marriage. The Andreani family enhanced the interiors. They added stuccos by Agostino Gerli and Giocondo Albertolli. In 1930, the City of Milan acquired the palazzo.
