Founded in 1979 the Goethe-Schule Harburg has a rich history. Initially known as Gesamtschule Harburg it later adopted its current name. The Goethe-Schule Harburg began as a Gesamtschule a type of comprehensive school. Joist Grolle played a key role in its establishment. Its history includes innovative approaches to education. A further renaming followed establishing the Goethe-Schule Harburg. Extensive renovations starting in 2016 modernized the facilities. The Kerschensteinerstrasse primary school which shared the buildings relocated in 2017. This freed up space and resources for the Goethe-Schule Harburg.

The Goethe-Schule Harburg boasts an impressive array of buildings. The school occupies a triangular plot. It is bordered by Eisendorfer Strasse Kerschensteinerstrasse and Bennigsenstrasse. There is also a red-brick building and a three-story cruciform building completed in 1962. Two buildings on Bennigsenstrasse are heritage-listed. They were designed by Harburg’s city architect Friedrich Homann in the late 19th century. The Goethe-Schule Harburg also has two sports halls. They cover nearly 4000 square meters and were renovated between 2010 and 2012.

Beyond academics the Goethe-Schule Harburg offers a variety of extracurricular activities. The Gospel Train youth choir which began in 1999 is a prime example. It is led by Peter Schuldt a GSH music teacher. He received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2015 for his exceptional work. The school also provides an extended afternoon program ERWAN offering free after-school care. A unique aspect of the Goethe-Schule Harburg is its countryside school “Haus im Stüch” in Lower Saxony.
