Picture the Rajini School a venerable institution nestled in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District. It stands at the southern tip of Rattanakosin Island a place steeped in history. Rajini School isn’t just any school. It’s a living testament to Thailand’s rich educational heritage. Founded in 1904 by Queen Saovabha Phongsri it replaced the Sunanthalai School. Queen Saovabha a remarkable woman herself poured her resources into this new venture.
The Rajini School’s story is interwoven with the modernization of Siam. In the late 19th century Western missionaries and King Chulalongkorn’s government established many schools. However girls’ education lagged behind. Sunanthalai School while initially successful under Queen Saovabha faced financial difficulties and closed in 1902. This prompted the Queen to establish Rajini School.
Rajini School’s unique feature is its Eastern orientation. Queen Saovabha felt Sunanthalai’s curriculum was too Western. She hired Japanese educator Tetsu Yasui as the first principal. This gave the school a distinct perspective contrasting the Western influence. Its royal connection boosted its popularity among aristocratic families.
The Rajini School initially occupied a shophouse. It quickly moved to a riverside building. Finally in 1906 it relocated to Sunanthalai School’s former campus. This building the Sunanthalai Building is a listed ancient monument. King Chulalongkorn commissioned it in 1880. It’s designed in the neoclassical style and is an architectural gem. The Rajini Foundation manages the school today.
The school has evolved over time. Its curriculum has modernized to reflect national changes. Princess Bichitra Chirabha Devakul a pioneering Thai teacher served as principal for many years. She played a significant role in the school’s early development. Today Rajini School continues to emphasize traditional Thai values. Students learn handicrafts like phuang malai garland making. They display their skills at art festivals. The Rajini School is a place where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly. It’s a school with a proud history and a bright future.
