Three hundred students. Thirty faculty. That’s Saint John’s High School on Johns Island. A vibrant community nestled in Charleston County. But this wasn’t always the case.

Saint John’s High School boasts a rich history. Its roots trace back to a Darlington school established in 1818. Local legend says a Mason teacher named it after the apostle Saint John. Initially it was for boys only. The school’s grounds were bustling. Important social military and political events took place there. During the Civil War Federal troops camped on the grounds. They even converted the school building into a hospital.

A Confederate monument stood there for a while. It was later moved to the courthouse square. In 1888 the South Carolina Legislature created a new school district. Saint John’s became part of the public school system.

In 1915 a new building was constructed. It opened its doors to 54 boys and 53 girls in 1916. The school continued to grow. New additions were made including an auditorium and gymnasium in 1935. The auditorium was dedicated to Superintendent J.C. Daniel in 1948. Today Saint John’s High School offers advanced placement and dual credit courses. Students can choose from three career academies. Hospitality and Tourism Computer Science and Culinary Arts are offered.

The school’s athletic teams are known as the Mighty Islanders. Their colors are royal blue and maroon. The Islanders compete in various sports. They also have a marching band agriculture program and student council. Saint John’s High School on Johns Island is more than just a school. It’s a legacy a community a testament to the enduring spirit of Charleston. It’s a place where students learn and grow and become part of something bigger than themselves. A vital part of the Charleston community that continues to thrive.
