One serene morning in 1505, a unique encounter unfolded at Gurudwara Majnu Tilla Sahib. A Sufi mystic named Abdulla, nicknamed Majnu for his intense devotion, resided on this hillock by the Yamuna River. He tirelessly ferried people across the river, seeking divine connection. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, arrived in Delhi and crossed paths with Majnu. Recognizing Majnu’s pure heart, Guru Nanak shared his wisdom, enlightening the Sufi mystic. Gurudwara Majnu Tilla Sahib stands as a testament to this profound meeting. The very ground we stand on was blessed by Guru Nanak’s presence. He remained at Majnu ka Tilla until the end of July 1505. The gurdwara, initially a humble structure, gained prominence over the centuries. It became a place of worship and a symbol of interfaith harmony. The sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Gobind, also graced this place. He visited Delhi at Emperor Jahangir’s invitation and sought refuge at Gurudwara Majnu Tilla Sahib. Later, when returning to Punjab, he again stopped at this sacred site. The present marble gurdwara, built in the early 1980s, houses the original smaller shrine within its complex. The first gurdwara was constructed in 1783 by General Baghel Singh. He played a key role in establishing several Sikh shrines in Delhi after negotiating with the Mughal emperor. Gurudwara Majnu Tilla Sahib continues to serve as a vibrant hub for the Sikh community. The langar, a free community kitchen, operates here, offering meals to all visitors, embodying the Sikh principles of seva and equality. Baisakhi, the birthday of the Khalsa, is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The gurdwara’s serene atmosphere, coupled with its rich history, offers a unique spiritual experience. It stands as a symbol of devotion, interfaith understanding, and selfless service.
