Has anyone ever lost a decade? Bucharest has. Right here, looming before us, stands Podul Nicolae Grigorescu, a bridge that swallowed ten years of the city’s life. Podul Nicolae Grigorescu, a testament to bureaucratic bungling and engineering oversights. This isn’t just a bridge; it’s a saga. A story of how a project meant to ease traffic ended up snarled in a mess of red tape, high-voltage cables, and political maneuvering. Podul Nicolae Grigorescu, conceived in 2010, was supposed to be finished in two short years. A sleek, modern overpass spanning the Dâmbovița River, connecting the Titan and Berceni districts. A mere two-point-four kilometers, with a magnificent 141-meter main span, the longest over the river. But 2012 came and went, and Podul Nicolae Grigorescu remained stubbornly incomplete. Four years were lost to expropriation disputes. The city council, it seemed, had forgotten to acquire the necessary land before starting construction. By 2016, that hurdle was cleared, only for a new, electrifying obstacle to emerge. The bridge, nearly finished by 2018, was deemed too close to high-voltage power lines. Imagine, a 100-million-lei bridge, practically complete, unusable because someone hadn’t considered the electrical grid. The cables, humming with 100,000 volts, loomed precariously close to the bridge deck. Too close for comfort, too close for safety. Work ground to a halt as authorities scrambled for a solution. Another two years were lost as the power companies, Enel and Transelectrica, were contracted to raise the lines. Finally, in July 2020, Podul Nicolae Grigorescu opened to traffic. A decade late and significantly over budget. The bridge stands now as a reminder of what happens when planning fails to account for reality. A symbol of Bucharest’s growing pains, its struggle to modernize amidst bureaucratic inertia. But it’s also a testament to persistence. A reminder that even the most delayed projects can eventually reach completion. As you cross Podul Nicolae Grigorescu, remember the decade it devoured. A decade lost, but also, perhaps, a lesson learned.
