Did you know that Winzerberg in Potsdam boasts a secret? This isn’t just any hill. Winzerberg a terraced vineyard near Sanssouci Palace holds a fascinating history. Commissioned by Frederick the Great in 1763 Winzerberg was initially designed by Christian Ludwig Hildebrandt. Its five retaining walls stretch about 300 meters. These walls weren’t just for show. They supported glass-covered trellises. These protected vines and fruit trees creating a unique greenhouse effect. Imagine grapes apples and pears flourishing in a carefully controlled environment. This was a very innovative approach for its time.

Winzerberg’s story isn’t one of constant glory. Between 1790 and 1794 early repairs were undertaken. Later in 1848 Hofbaumeister Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse oversaw renovations. He even built the iconic Winzerhaus a turreted villa in 1849. This wasn’t just a simple upgrade. Landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné transformed Winzerberg into a Tuscan-style vineyard a stunning aesthetic change.

The Bacchus staircase a double staircase at the lower terrace is another highlight. A half-relief of Bacchus’ head adorns this staircase giving it its name. Niches for zinc casts of antique statues add to the architectural splendor. Pergolas and balustrades added even more to this grand display of architectural prowess.

World War II left its mark. A partially completed air-raid shelter was built under Winzerberg. Three tunnels extended up to 100 meters. These were capable of sheltering approximately 300 people. Sadly after the war the tunnels became filled with rubble. Soviet forces attempted to blow up the entrance. This didn’t destroy the tunnels but only partially blocked the entrance.

Decades of neglect followed. A leaking water pipe discovered in 1980 further damaged the area. Then in 1996 assessments were made. The hill’s stability was examined. Hohlräume were filled to secure the structure.

Winzerberg’s resurgence began in 2004. The Bauverein Winzerberg a private association worked tirelessly on its restoration. This culminated in a triumphant reopening in 2018. This group’s efforts were recognized with prestigious awards including the Brandenburgian Heritage Conservation Prize in 2016 and the Europa Nostra Prize in 2018. Their dedication truly brought Winzerberg back to life. This hill with its rich history and painstaking restoration is a true testament to the power of preservation. It stands as a symbol of Potsdam’s enduring legacy. It’s a place where history beauty and resilience intertwine. It’s a story etched into the very stones of Winzerberg.
