Fünfhausen is part of Hamburg’s Bergedorf borough. Specifically, it is within the Kirchwerder quarter. It is a place with a unique history and some interesting geography.
During World War II, Hamburg suffered greatly from bombing. Many families lost their homes. To help those families, 50 wooden houses were built in Fünfhausen. The cubic shape of these houses led locals to call Fünfhausen “Kistendorf”. This translates to “box village”. These houses offered a fresh start for families.
Fünfhausen also had a visit from a prominent figure. In October 1954, German President Theodor Heuss visited Fünfhausen. Heuss’ visit marked an important moment for the community.
The location of Fünfhausen is quite scenic. It sits in the Kirchwerder quarter. To the west lies Ochsenwerder. The Sandbrack Lake sits in the heart of Fünfhausen. Nearby, you will find the Hohendeicher Lake and the Elbe River. To the north flows the Gose Elbe.

In 1944, Fünfhausen provided homes for bombed-out families. The settlement was known as “Kistendorf”. Before that, the site housed accommodations for a labor service camp. Today, 110 houses with wood cladding stand on Durchdeich.
The Fünfhausen school opened in April 1950. Initially, it was housed in a wooden addition to the Fünfhausen train station. This station was still in operation. The school started with 33 students. The Volksschule Durchdeich buildings were built in 1951. The school moved there at the beginning of the 1951/1952 school year.
The volunteer fire department of Fünfhausen was founded in 1972. It was created after the dissolution of the “civilian protection”. From 1911 to 2013, the “Hamburg Horticultural Experiment Station Fünfhausen” was located west of the Sandbrack.
