“Moon crossing bridge”. Does that sound like a painting? We are standing before the Togetsukyo Bridge. It is a landmark that embodies Kyoto’s romantic charm.

The Togetsukyo Bridge spans 155 meters across the Katsura River. The river flows leisurely through Saga Arashiyama. Arashiyama is a place of scenic beauty in Kyoto’s western hills.

Emperor Kameyama named the Togetsukyo Bridge. He saw a radiant moon shining over the river. It looked as if the moon was crossing over the entire bridge. That’s how it got its poetic name.

The first Togetsukyo Bridge was built in 836. The current one dates back to 1606. The bridge has been reconstructed since then. The current bridge allows visitors to admire the breathtaking scenery. The scenery changes throughout the seasons.

Though the bridge looks like it is made of wood it is not. Its columns and beams are reinforced concrete. Only the parapets are made from cypress.

There is much to do around the Togetsukyo Bridge area. You can try a matcha ice cream. You could visit a traditional tea house. Consider visiting the riverside park. You could even go on a traditional boat ride over the river.

During the spring cherry blossom season the bridge is crowded. People want to capture its enchanting beauty. As night falls the bridge is illuminated. It casts a dreamlike atmosphere. This enhances its timeless allure.

The mountain south of the bridge is Arashiyama. In spring the slopes take on the pink hue of cherry blossoms. During autumn they are blanketed by fiery red maple leaves.

You can take a rickshaw ride over the river. Another option is to dine at one of the many restaurants. They sit at either end of the Togetsukyo Bridge.

The Togetsukyo Bridge is more than just a crossing. It is a symbol. It is a symbol of Kyoto’s enduring beauty. Its history is long. Its views are breathtaking. The Togetsukyo Bridge is a must see.
