Amidst the gentle sway of trees, Loeperplatz unfolds before you, a tranquil oasis steeped in history. Loeperplatz isn’t just a square. It’s the heart of Lichtenberg, a place where the echoes of the past intertwine with the pulse of the present. Originally the village green of Lichtenberg, this expansive space, spanning roughly 7000 square meters, has witnessed centuries of change. Around 1890, it was named Wilhelmplatz after the German Kaiser. But in 1914, under Mayor Oskar Ziethen, it was renamed Loeperplatz. This honored the Loeper family. They played a significant role in Lichtenberg’s development. Today, the spirit of the old village green lives on. Möllendorffstraße encircles Loeperplatz, its tram tracks tracing its perimeter. Scheffelstraße and Bornitzstraße bisect the square. Rutnikstraße and Kielblockstraße also converge here. To the north, Josef-Orlopp-Straße and Storkower Straße mark its boundaries. Loeperplatz is a hub of activity, a place where history and modern life intersect. The BVG, Berlin’s public transport operator, once envisioned rerouting tram lines directly across the square. However, the Berlin Senate rejected this proposal. They recognized the historical significance of the old village green, still visible today, and chose to preserve its unique character. Loeperplatz also serves as a poignant reminder of the past. It’s home to a memorial dedicated to the victims of fascism, erected in 1950. This monument stands as a solemn testament to the struggles and sacrifices of those who suffered under Nazi rule. Adding to the square’s historical richness, you’ll find the protected Old Parish Church of Lichtenberg and the statue “Der Sämann” (The Sower). In the winter of 2013, the statue became a unique art installation when it was draped in fabric, playfully dubbed “The Sower’s New Clothes”. Loeperplatz seamlessly blends historical charm with modern convenience. Public transport is readily available. The square is well-served by various tram lines (16, 21, M13), U-Bahn line U5, and several bus routes (240, M13, N50, N5), and even the S-Bahn lines S41, S42, and S85. Loeperplatz is more than just a transportation hub. It’s a vibrant destination with something for everyone. The surrounding area is dotted with residential buildings constructed between 1905 and 1959, many of which are protected historical landmarks. North-east of Loeperplatz is the parish house of the evangelical church community, originally built in 1848/1849 and meticulously restored in 2000. The square also offers access to both Stadtpark Lichtenberg to the south and Gutspark Lichtenberg to the north, providing tranquil escapes within the bustling city. Several senior care facilities are also located around the square, adding to the sense of community. Loeperplatz is a place to pause, reflect, and connect with the rich tapestry of Berlin’s past and present.
