Envision a city besieged, a monument shrouded. That is how the Bronze Horseman, stood during the 900-day Siege of Leningrad. Today we admire this equestrian statue of Peter the Great. It graces Senate Square in St. Petersburg.

This is not just a statue. The Bronze Horseman is a symbol of St. Petersburg. It represents the city’s resilience and Peter the Great’s vision.

Catherine the Great, a German princess, commissioned the monument. She sought to connect herself to Peter the Great’s legacy. The inscription reads: “To Peter the First from Catherine the Second, 1782.” This highlights her admiration for her predecessor. It also shows her view of her place in the line of Russian rulers.

Etienne Maurice Falconet, a French sculptor, created this masterpiece. He chose to depict Peter not as a warlord. Instead, he showed him as a creator and benefactor of Russia. Peter’s arm stretches over the country he was building. A laurel wreath signifies his military triumphs.

Marie-Anne Collot, Falconet’s apprentice, sculpted Peter’s face. She used his death mask as a model. Fyodor Gordeev, a Russian sculptor, added the serpent. The horse tramples it. The serpent symbolizes enemies and opposition to Peter’s reforms. It also provides hidden support for the statue.

Finding a pedestal was a challenge. A peasant discovered a massive granite boulder. It became known as the Thunder Stone. Moving this 1,250-ton monolith took immense effort. It involved special piers and a sunken ship. The Thunder Stone boulder was transported 7.8 kilometers. It took half a year.

The statue’s creation spanned over a decade. Falconet left Russia before its completion due to a conflict. The monument was unveiled in 1782.

Alexander Pushkin immortalized the statue in his poem “The Bronze Horseman.” Although Pushkin called it the “copper horseman”. The poem tells of a flood and a man’s madness. The statue became known by that name ever since.

Legend says that as long as the Bronze Horseman stands, enemy forces cannot conquer St. Petersburg. During World War II, the statue was protected with sandbags and a wooden shelter.

The Bronze Horseman has inspired countless artists. It appears in paintings, poems, and even films. It is a cultural phenomenon. The statue also inspired the great jeweler Fabergé.

So, let the image of the Bronze Horseman remind us of St. Petersburg’s history. It reminds us of its strength and artistic soul.
