“Two cats of brick”, it might sound like the beginning of a children’s story. But this is real. These are the “Die Katze” sculptures here at Robert-Schmohl-Platz.

These sculptures aren’t just decorations. They’re guardians watching over us. They mark the entrances to this square.

These brick-built archways lead to the Robert-Schmohl-Platz. On top sit two cat sculptures known as “Die Katze”. One cat gazes out into the garden city. The other watches over the square.

These feline figures were created by Will Lammert. He was a sculptor and ceramicist. Lammert also had a workshop in Margarethenhöhe. He co-founded and led the “Keramische Werkstatt Margaretenhöhe”. Lammert created many sculptures for public buildings in Essen.

The Keramische Werkstatt Margaretenhöhe is now located at the former Zollverein coal mine. It’s a famous World Heritage Site. The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a vast coal mine. It was in operation from 1847 to 1993.

These cats have been here for decades watching over us. They have witnessed the changes. Essen transformed from an industrial heartland to a cultural center.

Consider this. The Ruhr Valley was once known for German industry and the Krupp family. But Essen has evolved. It now boasts modern towers and parks.

Even a UNESCO-listed industrial facility has been transformed. The Zollverein Mining Complex is now a monument with Bauhaus architecture. It is beautiful despite its industrial past.

The “Die Katze” sculptures stand as a reminder of Essen’s artistic spirit. They embody the city’s blend of industry and art. These cats are more than mere statues. They represent Essen’s past and its vibrant future.
