Hidden within Essen, Atelier & Galerie 52 whispers stories of creativity and collaboration. For eight years, this vibrant space nurtured the talents of photography students from the Folkwang University of the Arts. Atelier & Galerie 52 wasn’t just a studio. It was a dynamic hub where individual artistic expression flourished alongside collaborative projects. Both BA and MA students honed their skills, inspiring and challenging each other. The gallery’s regular exhibitions provided a platform for Folkwang students to showcase their work. They also hosted collaborative projects with other universities, fostering a dialogue between artists and art theorists. Atelier & Galerie 52 became known as a vital space for artistic exchange. Its reputation extended beyond the university walls, drawing in art enthusiasts from the wider community. However, the Folkwang University’s move to the new Zollverein Campus in October 2017 marked a turning point. Atelier & Galerie 52 lost its funding. This vibrant chapter in Essen’s art scene came to a close. Artist Sebastian Wolf, recognizing the significance of this space, embarked on a poignant project. He documented the last remaining artists in their studios and against a simple white backdrop. This portrait series stands as a tribute to Atelier & Galerie 52. It honors the space itself and the artists who brought it to life.
