Did you know Goodna’s name has a surprising origin? The land we stand on was once known as Woogaroo. This Aboriginal word meaning “shady” or “cool” perfectly captured the area’s lush riverside setting. But in 1865 a new name emerged: Goodna. Some say it’s a misinterpretation of an Aboriginal word meaning “dung”. This less-than-glamorous origin contrasts sharply with Goodna’s rich history.

Goodna is a suburb on the eastern edge of Ipswich. It’s just a short distance from Brisbane’s bustling center. The Brisbane River flows to the north. This provided early settlers with a crucial transport link. The Goodna Boat Ramp still stands today. It’s one of the few places you can launch a boat on this section of the river. It’s also a part of the Brisbane River Canoe Trail.

The area’s first European visitors were John Oxley’s exploration party in 1823. They found extensive sandstone beds. These became crucial for construction. Commandant Patrick Logan established the Woogaroo Quarry in 1826. It supplied building materials for Moreton Bay’s penal colony. Imagine the convicts using Goodna’s stone to build their prison walls! The sandstone’s also responsible for the area’s unique topography.

Early Goodna was a farming community. Sugar cotton livestock and timber were major industries. Bullock teams transported huge quantities of timber from Goodna’s wharf to Ipswich and Brisbane. The image of these powerful beasts hauling logs is a powerful visual. The area was officially proclaimed a village in 1856. A crucial year in Goodna’s history. This led to further development.

The railway arrived in 1875. The “turning of the sod” ceremony in 1873 drew over two thousand people. Even the Queensland Governor participated using a silver spade. Cobb and Co coaches also stopped in Goodna. They connected Brisbane and the surrounding areas before the railway arrived. Imagine the stagecoaches rattling through the streets.

Goodna thrived. Several churches opened. A school started in 1870. It quickly grew to 175 students by 1874. By 1888 the population reached 500. Three friendly societies thrived here: The Oddfellows the Loyal Rose of Denmark and the Good Templars.

Today Goodna boasts a vibrant community. Its heritage is undeniable. Its future is bright. The annual Jacaranda Festival draws thousands of visitors. They celebrate the town’s beauty and its past. You can find numerous parks sporting clubs and a shopping center within easy reach of the train station. Goodna is a true testament to resilience and growth. From its humble beginnings to its present-day vitality Goodna’s story is one of perseverance and adaptation. A story worth exploring.
