Standing here, at the Ruínas da Torre/Miradouro do Fojo, you can almost feel the whispers of history. This ancient tower, built centuries ago, was once an important sentinel overlooking the Porto region. Imagine the rugged men standing watch on its craggy walls, their eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger. Its imposing structure, now a crumbling relic of the past, was once a symbol of strength and security for the nearby Vila Nova de Gaia. It communicated directly by smoke signals and fire with the Castelo de Gaia, helping to watch over the people and land, centuries ago. The Ruínas da Torre/Miradouro do Fojo became part of the Quinta do Fojo in the 18th century when a British general named William Neville purchased the land. It was even used as a lookout point for the estate owners, the general adding stone stairs and decorative elements to the tower. Today, you can climb these same steps, even as the tower’s walls, now covered in vines, threaten to crumble. The Ruínas da Torre/Miradouro do Fojo is a reminder that time moves forward, leaving behind traces of the past, for us to discover and explore.
