Did the name “Engelberg-Dollfuss-Siedlung” ever grace your ears? Probably not. Yet, right here in Maxglan West, that’s what this area was originally called. Maxglan West, a district of Salzburg, isn’t known for grand palaces or soaring cathedrals. This area, nestled between Salzburg Airport and Wals-Siezenheim, tells a different kind of story. It’s a story of humble beginnings, evolving identities, and the quiet resilience of everyday life.

Maxglan West, as we know it, began to take shape in the 1930s. The draining of the Glan wetlands revealed land ripe for development. The “Engelberg-Dollfuss-Siedlung” housing project emerged, a statement against the socialist housing projects of the 1920s. Later, after the Anschluss, it was renamed Kendlersiedlung.

The second World War brought its share of sorrow and displacement. A simple, improvised church, Kirche St. Vitalis, became a refuge for many displaced Eastern European Germans seeking solace and community in the aftermath. As the community grew, a new church, designed by Wilhelm Holzbauer, replaced the old structure in 1950, eventually gaining parish status in 1967.

Maxglan West might not have the grandeur of Salzburg’s Altstadt. But within its unassuming streets and houses lies a story of transformation, resilience, and the enduring spirit of community that has shaped this quiet corner of Salzburg.
