Remember the Great Hiking Era of the early 1900s? Inspiration Point was a sought-after destination even back then. Today we stand at Inspiration Point a place offering views of Los Angeles Basin.
Inspiration Point in Angeles National Forest is calling. It’s a popular hiking destination known for its breathtaking panoramic views. Look around and you will see the Los Angeles Basin. On clear days hikers can see as far as Catalina Island. You can also see the Pacific Ocean from here.
Inspiration Point sits at 4714 feet. It gives hikers a rewarding experience. It has diverse flora and fauna and stunning vistas. The trail here gives you a true taste of Southern California’s natural beauty.
The area has been a popular hiking spot since the early 20th century. Native American tribes like the Tongva lived here thousands of years ago. The trail shows how nature recovers after wildfires.
To get here you drive to the Eaton Saddle trailhead. It’s off Mount Wilson Red Box Road. Park near the fire road gate. The hike is about 5.2 miles round trip. The elevation gain is about 1500 feet. It’s moderately challenging and takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Spring from March to May is the best time to visit. Wildflowers bloom and the temperatures are mild. Fall from September to November has clear skies and comfortable hiking weather. Early mornings offer the best visibility.
Remember to bring plenty of water at least 2 liters. You should have sun protection like a hat sunglasses and sunscreen. Sturdy hiking boots are a must. Pack snacks a light lunch and a first aid kit. A map or GPS device can be helpful. Don’t forget your camera.
Check the weather before you hike. Tell someone your hiking plans. Stay on the trails. Be aware of wildlife like rattlesnakes. Carry a charged cell phone. Start early to avoid the heat.
Mount Lowe Railway ruins are nearby. You can also visit Echo Mountain. Mount Wilson Observatory is another option. So is San Gabriel Peak and Millard Canyon Falls.
Pack out all trash. Stay on trails to prevent erosion. Don’t disturb wildlife or plants. Keep noise levels down.

More than 100 years ago Thaddeus Lowe planned a mountain railway. It would take passengers from Pasadena to the San Gabriel Mountains crest. The railway opened on July 4 1893. It ran seven miles to Echo Mountain and the Alpine Tavern. Echo Mountain had a hotel a chalet an observatory a casino and a dance hall. Floods and fires caused problems over the years. The railway closed in 1938 after a flood. Now only ruins remain.
The Mt. Lowe Alpine Tavern was once located at Mt. Lowe Campground. The original Alpine Tavern was made of pine on a granite foundation. When buildings on Echo Mountain were lost in 1905 the Tavern became the mountain’s main attraction. It had tennis courts shuffleboard and ping pong.
Just after the Three Levels view you see what used to be the Mt. Lowe Railway Circular Bridge. The bridge edged out over the side of the cliff and was the feature image on Mt. Lowe souvenir photos.
